ARTS 340 Week 3 DQ 2 -
Please find Catherine Nelson's article "Seeking Haydn" in the UOPX library, read it, listen to the excerpts below, and answer the following questions. Two quartet movements:
"Joke" Quartet (op. 30, no. 2), III. & V.
"Quinten" Quartet (op. 74, no. 2), I. Allegro
Two qualities found in Haydn's music recur in the interviews in this article: his sense of humor, and the almost tragic melancholy these players find in some of his slow movements. In combination with your reading from our text this week, how do these two contrasting qualities reflect Haydn's time? Another theme that comes up throughout the interviews is Haydn's willingness to experiment with form and content in the quartet genre. What are some of the ways in which he was experimental? From your listening experience this week, do you find his quartets to be as daring (experimental) as his symphonies? Why or why not?
